3 Simple Ways to Have an Amazingly Successful Summer Maternity Photoshoot

Summer maternity photoshoot in Longmont

Summer is an amazing season to have a maternity photoshoot done. Not that you had much of a say in that! =) But count yourself blessed, if you do have a chance to have a summer maternity photoshoot, because the weather is perfect and Colorado is green. Just because it’s summer though, doesn’t mean that you don’t need to prepare for your session. There are things you’ll want to keep in mind when preparing for your summer maternity photoshoot. And there are definitely things you’ll want to make sure you pack. Below are three simple ways to make sure your summer maternity photoshoot is a successful one.

Simple Way #1: Choose Your Gowns Wisely

There are two main things you’ll want to keep in mind when choosing gowns for your summer maternity photoshoot. First is the weather. It can get really, really hot here in the summer. So make sure you’re choosing a gown that will breathe. You don’t want to find yourself overheating during your session, do you?

Also, choose a gown that works with the season and, especially the greenery. Neutrals are always great. But when you’re choosing colors, make sure you’re keeping in mind analogous and complementary colors to the color green. Those would include green, blue, red, and yellow. I’m not saying that other colors won’t work. It depends on the location of your session. And the best person to ask about your location would be your photographer.

Simple Way #2: Choose Your Location Wisely

As I said above, it gets hot during the summer here in Colorado. So you’ll want to keep that in mind when you’re choosing your location. This is especially the case if you’ve been having difficulties with the heat later in your pregnancy. There are a few options here. You could choose a location down here in the Denver metro area and Front Range that has shade. Also, water helps to make the temperature more temperate as well. Some great locations with those features are:

Another option is to move into the mountains a bit. You really don’t need to go very far in the mountains to get the great cooling effects of altitude. You can choose locations that are just in the foothills or all the way into the mountains and near the continental divide. Here are some great suggestions for that:

If you want to photograph in a hotter location, it would be best to photograph in the morning, instead of the evening. It tends to be cooler then.

Simple Way #3: Pack Smartly

I tell this to each and every maternity client of mine in the summer, pack bug spray. This is especially the case when you are at a location near water. So before you read any further, throw that bug spray in the car.

You’ll also want to make sure and pack some water. It is really important to stay hydrated throughout your session. In fact, I recommend hydrating throughout the day. When you’re nearing the end of your pregnancy, even a maternity photoshoot can take it out of you. So don’t push your body and drink that water.

At the end of the day, working closely with your photographer is key to having a successful maternity photoshoot. So make sure you’re asking questions and collaborating with them to make your session a success.
