Want Amazingly Epic Mountains in your Rocky Mountain National Park Maternity Session?
Nothing beats Rocky Mountain National Park for a maternity session with epic mountain vistas. There is a reason it’s a national park, right? And barring a major snow storm, the location of Sprague Lake is hard to beat for a portrait session any time of year. Put aside the magnificent backdrop and the accessibility of this location alone makes it a winner. Add on the variety of backdrops and, frankly, I’m in love with this place.
Why Sprague Lake Shines for Maternity Photography
Mountain Backdrops and a Truly Coloradan Aesthetic
If you’re looking for mountains, you really don’t need to look any further. Dramatic mountain vistas is how I would describe the backdrop to Sprague Lake. Honestly, there are no words for the magnificence of this location. And when it comes to a Coloradan aesthetic, nothing beats a mountain vista. It is what Colorado is known for. No one would think that this couple is in Iowa. That’s for sure!
Variety of Backdrops
One of the things that surprised me about this location was its variety of backdrops. You’d think that a lake in the mountains would be a one trick pony, but this is far from the truth. With the dense coniferous forests, amazing shoreline, and boardwalk, there is quite the variety in a short walk.
Accessibility
This is one of the most accessible locations I photograph at. I probably wouldn’t take a wheelchair on this trail, but, frankly, any other abilities can easily navigate it. It is flat. It is short. And it is easily traversable.
Why Sprague Lake Might be for you
I’d recommend Sprague Lake for you if want any or all of the following:
Mountains. Nothing beats the the national park for mountain vistas.

Unfortunately this location is not recommended for the summer due to timed entry. This location is down Bear Lake Corridor, which has timed entry until 6 pm. That is typically too late of a start time, even in the summer. Consult with your photographer about their approach to timed entry. And be prepared to have a plan B, as getting timed entry can be problematic.
Photo permits are no longer required at Rocky Mountain National Park for portraits. They are needed for styled sessions and marketing only sessions.

Due to its proximity to the mountains, it is best to start about 70 minutes prior to normal session start times.
